Windows 8 OS Goes Official
Microsoft today unveiled the biggest Windows release ever, Windows 8 and Windows RT to the tech world. Active Windows 7 customers can upgrade starting from $39.99 as from today.
Windows 7 was introduced three years ago, but Windows 8 represents the biggest change in Microsoft's user interface since Windows 95 came out 17 years ago. "We've reimagined Windows, and we've reimagined the whole PC industry," Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told Reuters Television.
"One person called it historic, unique," said Steven Sinofsky, head of Microsoft's Windows unit and the driving force behind Windows 8, who opened the launch event in New York in front about 1,000 media and
PC industry partners.
Windows 8 is a bold step by Microsoft - a bold step that's positioning the company much, much better than before when it comes to mobile products like tablets. In fact, with the recent success of the tablet market, it's only natural for Microsoft to try and alter its main product so that it's better-suited for touchscreen use, and that's exactly what it did.
With a brand new "Modern" UI and loads of other changes, Microsoft is hoping that Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT are going to be successful competitors against Apple's iOS and Google's Android - two mobile operating systems that are increasingly taking over the mobile sector.
"It's twice the amount of storage as a competing tablet for the same price," Sinofsky said, comparing the entry level 32 GB Surface with the cheapest 16 GB model of Apple's latest full-sized iPad, which both cost $499.
